Digging for Hope: Turning Wine to Water and Other Modern Day Miracles

Doc Hendley never set out to be a hero.

In 2004, Hendley—a small-town bartender—launched a series of wine-tasting events to raise funds for clean-water projects and to bring awareness to the world's freshwater crisis. He planned to donate the proceeds through traditional channels, but instead found himself traveling to one of the world's most dangerous hot spots: Darfur, Sudan.

There, Hendley witnessed a government-sponsored genocide where the No. 1 weapon wasn't bullets—it was water. With limited funds, Hendley realized he couldn't build new wells costing $10,000 a pop, but he could hire local workers to fixed damaged wells for a fraction of the cost.

He'd found his mission. Today, Hendley and Wine to Water continue to help stricken peoples repair and maintain water- containment systems in places like Darfur, Cambodia, Uganda, and Haiti.

Join us for an afternoon of sports talk and meet the Triangle/East Chapter’s Division I football coaches. Get to know Duke coach David Cutcliffe, ECU coach Ruffin McNeill, NC Central coach Henry Frazier III, NC State coach Dave Doeren, and UNC coach Larry Fedora as they participate in a panel discussion and Q&A session.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on items from each university. Proceeds benefit the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame – Triangle/East Chapter Scholarship Fund for Triangle-area high school athletes.
