NC House 38
Chris Mizelle
Are you an incumbent?
No
1. Do you support the City of Raleigh’s $275 million parks bond on the ballot this November?
No
2. Do you support the $353.2 million Wake Tech bond on the ballot this November?
No
3. Do you support the $530.7 million Wake County schools bond on the ballot this November?
No
4. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers?
Not from a government perspective. Government should not pick and choose winners in the economy. This should be done by the free market.
5. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers? Why or why not?
Not from a government perspective. Government should not pick and choose winners in the economy. This should be done by the free market.
6. Do you support Medicaid expansion?
No
Do you support Medicaid expansion? Why or why not?
No. The more the government gets involved in healthcare, the more expensive and bureaucratic it becomes. However, there are things we could do to make healthcare more available and affordable. We need to eliminate Certificate of Need, support Direct Primary Care, support scope of practice reform and support telemedicine by allowing out of state doctors to treat North Carolina patients virtually.
7. How do you intend to collaborate with your partners at the municipal and county level to create a better environment for our region?
I would work towards allowing property owners the ability to have legal recourse when someone pollutes their property. I would also work towards repealing eminent domain so government cannot take your property to give to one of their special interest entities that may have plans to harm the environment.
8. How will you work to support Wake County’s public education needs, including our public schools, community colleges and public universities?
I will work to expand school choice. School choice means the state should fund students and not systems. Parents should be able to take their education dollars to alternative schools if they so choose. This means competition for public schools, which is a good thing. If public schools want to compete against alternative schools, they will be forced to innovate and change.
9. How will you help North Carolina to be more competitive regionally, nationally, and internationally?
By getting the government out of the way. People are at their best when they are most free. Government should not be in the business of picking and choosing winners in the economy. If we allowed people to keep more of their hard earned money and eliminated barriers to entry into markets, we would have more choice and competition. We would also have lower prices. This would allow greater social mobility and attract more people to live here. It would foster innovation and maximize peace and prosperity for our citizens.
Transportation/Transit – Continue to promote and implement an effective transit plan to optimize service delivery and position the state for ongoing growth.
To the extent that the state funds transportation, we should make efficient use of state resources by ensuring the money is spent on sustainable projects built where people live and work to maximize the impact. We should ensure state roads in our urban centers are safe for all modes of transportation.
Economic Strength - Create a business-friendly environment to attract, retain and grow business, diversify the economic base, and create job opportunities for all citizens.
We should reduce the income and corporate tax. This will allow people and businesses to keep their hard earned money and allow them to invest that money as they choose. It also incentives production. We need to eliminate occupational licensing which creates unnecessary barriers into markets. This will allow more people to find work and also start their own businesses. We should also allow people to run businesses from their home provided that it does not present any legitimate health or safety risk.
Affordable Housing – Develop an effective affordable housing plan through collaboration with the government, the private sector, the community, and individuals.
We need to eliminate single family zoning which says you can only build single family homes in certain places. We need to allow builders to respond to demand and build affordable housing such as duplexes, triplexes, etc. We also need to support Accessory Dwelling Units which allow homeowners to rent out part of their property whether attached or detached from the main home. We also need to end all unnecessary land use restrictions. Only those that protect legitimate health or safety risks should be kept. Each of these things will increase the supply of affordable housing options and help decrease housing prices.
Great Government - Promote a vision of a city government that partners with all levels of government to empower, protect and serve its citizens through a culture of respect, collaboration, and innovation
I would never use the term "great government" but whatever form of government we have it should protect property rights. Don't pass laws that trample on individual liberty. If anything, we probably need to repeal more laws rather than pass more laws. Let people keep more of their hard earned money. Give law enforcement less bad laws to enforce and free them to go after actual criminals that hurt people and steal from them. If an officer violates someone's rights, hold that officer and department accountable.
Growth and Sustainability - Establish a deliberate and realistic approach to address growth and mobility while preserving our environment and healthy communities.
Reduces taxes, both income and corporate. Reduce red tape and barriers to entry into markets. End occupational licensing. Allow people to sue those who pollute their property.
Public Safety - Provide a safe, secure, and healthy community through coordinated, efficient, and effective public safety services.
Give law enforcement less bad laws to enforce, such as our drug laws. Free them to go after actual criminals like those who hurt others or steal from them. Hold bad officers accountable when they violate individual's rights.
Social and Economic Vitality - Improve economic and social opportunities in vulnerable communities through strategic partnerships.
End occupational licensing. Allow people to run businesses from their homes if there are no health or safety risks. Reduce taxes.
