Are you an incumbent?
Yes
1. Do you support the City of Raleigh’s $275 million parks bond on the ballot this November?
Yes
2. Do you support the $353.2 million Wake Tech bond on the ballot this November?
Yes
3. Do you support the $530.7 million Wake County schools bond on the ballot this November?
Yes
4. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers?
Yes
5. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers? Why or why not?
Yes. NC and its counties and cities like Wake County and Raleigh are attractive to businesses of all sizes with well paying jobs for employees and a resulting economic boost. With the intense competition for attracting businesses, we should provide incentives that ensure that an agreed upon number of jobs within an agree upon time frame come to the state. We have been able to bring many jobs to NC in the last couple of years. I hope we can ensure a trained workforce in various industries and trades by continuing to invest in our public schools, a great community college system and public university system.
6. Do you support Medicaid expansion?
Yes
Do you support Medicaid expansion? Why or why not?
Yes. This is long overdue. We have over 600,000 (and and more every day) North Carolinians without affordable healthcare, especially among those individuals earning lower incomes and those in rural parts of the State. People are dying, hospitals are closing, and economies of communities are struggling. We are giving up many millions of dollars every day that could provide preventive healthcare, hospital reimbursements, and economic prosperity. The disparities of healthcare in vulnerable populations must be addressed with programs like Medicaid expansion.
7. How do you intend to collaborate with your partners at the municipal and county level to create a better environment for our region?
I will continue to develop relationships and work together with our Raleigh area and Wake County partners to address and find solutions to complicated problems. Not all solutions are applicable statewide and it's important to address problems with the support and partnerships of local community leadership. I will continue to seek the involvement of our community leadership when I am developing ideas for legislation and ask for their input when a bill is before us in committee or for a vote on the floor.
8. How will you work to support Wake County’s public education needs, including our public schools, community colleges and public universities?
I am committed to working to address the education needs of Wake County and the rest of the state. The top priority for our NCGA budgets must be to significantly increase investments in early childhood programs, our public schools, community colleges and public universities. These are investments in the vitality and quality of the life of this region and in our future. We are fortunate to have a top tier public university and community college in Wake County, and our public schools are also doing a great job educating our young people, especially given the under-funding from the state. I'm grateful to the County for providing supplements that help us recruit and retain great educators.
9. How will you help North Carolina to be more competitive regionally, nationally, and internationally?
We can raise the profile of our region and our state by focusing on policies that give our residents and our businesses the best opportunities for the highest quality of life, success and prosperity. North Carolina is a wonderful state, but we must continue to address the challenges of growth, inadequate affordable housing, education needs, and health and wealth disparities.
Transportation/Transit – Continue to promote and implement an effective transit plan to optimize service delivery and position the state for ongoing growth.
I will continue to consider ways to improve our transit options. Growth is straining our current options and if we do not place this as a priority, we will soon find this area to be a less desirable place for people at all levels of income and all stages of life to live, work, and flourish.
Economic Strength - Create a business-friendly environment to attract, retain and grow business, diversify the economic base, and create job opportunities for all citizens.
Economic strength is the very foundation for the vitality of a region, and a business-friendly environment is an important way to ensure that strength. We must find ways to encourage the strategic inclusion of small businesses in our economic base and build programs for work force development that provide job opportunities for trades as well as technology. A key to that is our outstanding Wake Community College.
Affordable Housing – Develop an effective affordable housing plan through collaboration with the government, the private sector, the community, and individuals.
This will be a top priority for me and should be for all elected officials at all levels.
Great Government - Promote a vision of a city government that partners with all levels of government to empower, protect and serve its citizens through a culture of respect, collaboration, and innovation
Great governments embrace the importance of inclusion and involvement of its citizens.
Growth and Sustainability - Establish a deliberate and realistic approach to address growth and mobility while preserving our environment and healthy communities.
We must balance growth and mobility for residents with the potential for impacting a sustainable environment and the health of the community. Our future depends on it.
Public Safety - Provide a safe, secure, and healthy community through coordinated, efficient, and effective public safety services.
I believe we can promote and provide for a safe, secure and healthy community through public safety services that are adequately funded and inclusive of strong partnerships with community residents.
Social and Economic Vitality - Improve economic and social opportunities in vulnerable communities through strategic partnerships.
We must find ways to provide our vulnerable populations, like seniors and those with disabilities, with increased support services, relying on the partnerships with non-profits and community agencies.
