Wake County School Board District 6

4. If elected, what are your plans for working with the Wake County Board of Commissioners to achieve our schools’ needs?
Bringing clear, well defined needs to our commissioners is the first step. Managing our budget so our Commissioners can have confidence we are investing the funding they provide in improvements, non-teaching staff support, and facility support.
The first thing I would like to do is bring light to some of the more tangible needs we have. District 6 really needs one more Middle school to accommodate the needs of our families and students. I would also love to see more Vo-Tech within pods, classrooms, or even a school to bring modern life lessons and career skills to K-12.
By raising the floor for as many Wake County residents possible, our County will thrive. If we thrive, then we generate more tax revenue (investments). This will in turn give our commissioners a larger budget to reinvest into our systems and services.
5. How do you plan to engage and build trust with parents, employers, and other stakeholders of your school district?
1. I will work to create a chat board hosted by WCPSS for parents, students, and staff to express concerns and share solutions. If 300 students are facing the same challenges and they can share with the community as a whole, then the community can offer more support anonymously.
2 . We have to give our staff more autonomy. When a teacher expresses their own views in a personal arena, on their personal time, WCPSS has no place trying to silence that staff member. There should always be a clear separation of how an employer can limit or influence the thought or opinion of a staff member. In good taste and in good faith.
3. I will expect any curriculum to provide a support method that makes teaching as clear and easy as possible. I want better metrics to track and grade success of our teachers, schools, and system. If a child is struggling, I want an easy method to assist the family and students.
6. What will you do to improve school safety in Wake County?
If we create productive, empowered, and life ready graduates, then we will have a much safer Wake County. As my mother would say "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop." If we can create enough access and opportunity to turn passions into professions, we will be ahead of the curve.
I would work to reduce the SEL concepts and would work to return us to the three A's. Academics, Athletics, and Art. We have to stop focusing on how others view our students and teach our to view yourself. Building good character by showing our students how to provide for themselves, think for themselves, and be their own champions.
SROs should be well defined in their role, I think exterior security should be law enforcement so they have more autonomy in preventing threats from even getting on campus. Each school should be able to assess their own interior needs and we should work to meet those needs. If an interior SRO is needed or wanted, they should be in plane clothes, and have a teaching role. DARE, Gang prevention, and even self defense classes for our students would be a great way to engage.
7. What are the growing trends in student needs, and how should the Wake County Public School System address them?
Right now the largest need is academic success. Without having the best academic track, we are missing out on helping the brightest students reach their potential. Students need to be life ready at the end of grade 12.
The three A's .. Academics, Athletics, and Art
Academics will feed the mind, Athletics will feed the body, and Art will feed the soul. Returning to tangible teaching and providing more access and opportunities to success will reduce a lot of the mental and emotional needs our students have now.
Our special needs students are being forgotten about. Too many families need more than what we provide. I will help create more partnerships and more access to outside support so our families are better equipped to give their children the best they can provide.
8. How do you propose the Wake County Public School System overcome its current labor shortage? Please give specific steps you wish to see taken.
We must use the resources that we have. We could let our High School students that have a desire to teach and share knowledge with our lower grade students. This will help take the burden off of teachers, and we can give GPA boosts, scholarships to the Ed field, or school credits.
This way our students that go to college and become teachers will return to Wake, have a mentor already, will have some real experience, and will last longer once they enter the field.
Short term, we should be leaning on our central office staff for more "in-class" support.
Teacher pay needs to be managed at the County level. I will email and visit the NCGA every week to encourage agreement on this. We need a faster track for our teachers to make 50,000 per year.
9. What should the school system focus on to ensure children are ready for the jobs of tomorrow?
I am hoping to bring modernized vacations to our Wake County students. The integration of using 3D technology, imaging, and printing will bring a new element of traditional trades. This vision will also help light more paths for our students K-12. If we can inspire more students entering real life, we will have more productive citizens.
If we create more access and opportunities for our K-12 students, they will be empowered at the end of grade 12. They will be inspired and better educated. This will create a very natural lift of the lowest denominator and we will all benefit from that approach.
This can be done with a pod system for every single school. A curriculum that focuses on the different fields of careers. ie Medical is everything from Doctors, to nurses, and then lab techs, etc. We could introduce more fields of careers, and let students find what inspires them.
We must increase the academic output to ensure our students will be competitive in all markets. I will work to bring this to K-12. At the end of grade 12, every student should be ready for life.
