4. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers?
Yes, I support the use of incentives to attract and retain employers.
5. Do you support the use of incentives for the attraction and retention of employers? Why or why not?
It is important that North Carolina have the tools in its toolbox to attract new businesses to North Carolina so that we can support economic growth and good-paying jobs for hard working North Carolinians.
6. Do you support Medicaid expansion?
Yes
Do you support Medicaid expansion? Why or why not?
Medicaid expansion is long overdue in North Carolina, and it is not right that politicians in Raleigh have not provided access to affordable healthcare to families. The current General Assembly has repeatedly refused billions of dollars to extend healthcare coverage to more than 600,000 North Carolinians. This has cost the state $6 billion and countless jobs, and moreover left families without coverage.
7. How do you intend to collaborate with your partners at the municipal and county level to create a better environment for our region?
Creating open doors with local leaders is the best step to knowing the needs of our cities, towns and county. In my first term in the State Senate I worked closely with municipalities across the district to ensure that we were meeting the needs of the community. I will continue to do this as a member of the General Assembly.
8. How will you work to support Wake County’s public education needs, including our public schools, community colleges and public universities?
During my first term in public office I advocated to fully fund our public schools and have advocated for raises for faculty and staff at our colleges. I have worked closely with Superintendent Cathy Moore to ensure the needs of the public school system are met and have been a champion for our public universities and community colleges. I will continue to build on these relationships and the relationships I have in the General Assembly to advance the education needs in the County.
9. How will you help North Carolina to be more competitive regionally, nationally, and internationally?
North Carolina was recently ranked as the number one state to do business. This is based on a number of criteria and we must continue to make investments that keep North Carolina at the top. This includes making investments in the things that we know make North Carolina a great place to work, live and raise a family - public education, healthcare, the environment and the arts, culture and entertainment industries.
Transportation/Transit – Continue to promote and implement an effective transit plan to optimize service delivery and position the state for ongoing growth.
North Carolina is an attractive place to live and do business for many reasons, which means we are experiencing growth at incredible rates. We must continue to invest in critical infrastructure that allows people to move through the state efficiently, including investments in public transportation like light rail and rapid transit, ensuring that public infrastructure is accessible, and funding critical road projects.
Economic Strength - Create a business-friendly environment to attract, retain and grow business, diversify the economic base, and create job opportunities for all citizens.
North Carolina is ranked as the number one state to do business. To maintain our economic strength and ensure job opportunities, we must invest in education to ensure a strong workforce, and use the tools in our tool box like incentives for new businesses and job development investment grants to attract and retain businesses.
Affordable Housing – Develop an effective affordable housing plan through collaboration with the government, the private sector, the community, and individuals.
Ensuring access to affordable housing is critical in North Carolina. We must work with partners such as the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency to fund grant and low-interest loan opportunities that help families afford housing, work with private industry to collaborate on ways to control costs and create new affordable housing, and create state-backed tax credits for seniors, veterans and other vulnerable populations to keep property taxes from pricing families out of their homes.
Great Government - Promote a vision of a city government that partners with all levels of government to empower, protect and serve its citizens through a culture of respect, collaboration, and innovation
We must ensure strong relationships at every level of government, both with horizontal and vertical alignment, so that we have open lines of communication and goals that are based on the needs of our community. Further, we must intentionally and creatively engage citizens, listen to their concerns and ideas, and promote opportunities to collaborate.
Growth and Sustainability - Establish a deliberate and realistic approach to address growth and mobility while preserving our environment and healthy communities.
North Carolina, especially Wake County, is attracting new people every day that want to live and raise their families here. That means we must respond and be ready for future growth by ensuring that we invest in critical infrastructure such as roads, housing, and broadband. We must also continue to protect our green spaces which provide enhancements to quality of life.
Public Safety - Provide a safe, secure, and healthy community through coordinated, efficient, and effective public safety services.
Addressing public safety requires a multi-layered approach that includes ensuring that individuals have access to economic mobility, mental health services, healthcare, food and shelter, and that we rethink how we utilize resources to fund these services. During the 2021 Legislative Session, I was proud to file SB 565 to strengthen policies and standards regarding law enforcement officers. This bill, if passed, would provide funding to support community policing efforts across North Carolina, create incentives for LEOs that have exemplary service, create a statewide database for LEOs that have had their law enforcement certification suspended or revoked or have a critical incident on file, and establish minimum hiring and training standards.
Social and Economic Vitality - Improve economic and social opportunities in vulnerable communities through strategic partnerships.
We must ensure that while our community responds to growth that we do not displace vulnerable communities. This means we must have creative development solutions and opportunities for tax credits that allow vulnerable families to stay in their homes. Further, we must help individuals put more money their pockets by reintroducing NC Earned Income Tax Credit, support programs that help individuals claim all the federal tax credits for which they are eligible through partnerships like free tax preparation through the United Way, and expand access to educational opportunities through free community college and support with basic needs.
